Deals Rummy Rules

In Deals rummy you agree on a number of deals before you start – often two or three. Points from each deal are added up, and when the last deal is over, the player with the lowest total wins.

Each individual deal uses the normal 13-card rummy rules: 13 cards each, a wild joker, and a valid declaration needs two sequences with at least one pure sequence.

How it works

  1. Agree on the number of deals. Our free game offers 2 or 3 deals.
  2. Play the first deal. The player who declares correctly scores 0.
  3. Each losing player scores the points left in their hand (up to 80), or 80 for a wrong declaration.
  4. Write the scores down and play the next deal.
  5. After the final deal, add up each player’s points. The lowest total wins.

Unlike Pool rummy, nobody is knocked out along the way. Everyone plays every deal, so one bad hand doesn’t end your game – but every point you give away stays on your score.

Worked example: 3 deals, you vs the computer

DealWhat happenedYouComputer
1You declare036
2Computer declares; you had no pure sequence780
3You declare029
Total7865

You won two of the three deals, but the computer wins the game with 65 points against your 78. One heavy loss in deal 2 cost you the game. This is the key lesson of Deals rummy: keeping your losing deals cheap matters as much as winning deals. Building your pure sequence early is the best protection.

Ties

If two players finish with the same total, groups settle it in different ways. A common choice is to play one extra deal between the tied players. Agree on this before you start.

Variations to know about

  • Number of deals. Two, three and six deals are all common. More deals give more time to recover from a bad hand.
  • Counting the other way. Some versions start each player with a balance and move points from the losers to the winner after each deal, so the highest balance wins. The result is usually the same as counting lowest points.
  • Dropping. Drop rules in Deals rummy differ more than in other formats. Some groups don’t allow drops at all, while others use the usual 20 and 40 point penalties. Settle this before the first deal.

FAQ

Who wins in Deals rummy?

The player with the lowest total points after the last deal. Winning the most deals doesn’t guarantee a win if you lost heavily in another deal.

How many deals are played in Deals rummy?

It is agreed before the game starts. Two or three deals are popular for quick games; our free game offers both.

Can a player be eliminated in Deals rummy?

No. Everyone plays all the deals. Elimination is a feature of Pool rummy, not Deals rummy.

What is the maximum score in one deal?

80 points, whether from a very poor hand or a wrong declaration.
